SELF-CARE

Are you practicing self-care?

What is your self-care go to?

Self-care is any activity that we do intentionally in order to take care of our mental, emotional, spiritual and physical well being. Although it’s a simple concept in theory, it’s something we often overlook. Furthermore, it’s something that is often misunderstood for selfishness, when in reality, it’s key to maintaining good relationships with others.

Practicing self-care is about knowing what we need in order to take care of ourselves, which in turn, positions us to help others; meaning if I don’t take enough care of myself, I won’t be in a place to give to my loved ones.

We see this clearly expressed in

Mark 12:31  “Love your neighbor, as you love yourself.”

Here are a few key self -care tips:

  1. Create a “NO” list, with things you know you don’t like or you no longer want to do.  (This is my #1 tip)  Ej. Not checking emails at night, not attending gatherings you don’t like, not answering your phone during lunch/dinner.  You define your “no” list and be true to yourself.
  2. Schedule a day off!  Notice I said, “schedule” it.  It won’t just happen.  There is always a ton of things to do around the house.  Shut down.  Turn off. Go off the radar.  You may want to get your nails done,  get a massage or visit the spa!   If finances is an obstacle, get creative.   Fill your bathtub, surround it with candles and play your favorite music.   Have your favorite bathrobe and fragranced lotion awaiting with soft slippers.  (You get the idea!)
  3. Exercise. Don’t let Covid strip you of that!  If your favorite gym is closed or you can no longer afford a membership, no problem.  Open your front door and go for a brisk walk or run.  Watch exercise videos for inspiration and get moving!  Limit your relationship with the couch –  no harm in dating the couch, just don’t marry it!  Keep in mind that exercise is not about a pant size, it has to do with your over all wellbeing.
  4. Surround yourself with the right people.   I can’t stress this enough.  It’s right up there with eating the right food, drinking water and taking your vitamins.  The right people will empower you to soar!
