Harness Your Potential- by Matt Gideon

What if I told you there is only ONE thing that separates you from reaching your full potential.

What if this ONE thing can lead to the biggest tragedy or greatest success imaginable.

Most of humanity lives comfortably somewhere between these two extremes.

“The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled…” -Les Brown

If you’re reading this, the first step in harnessing your potential and finding your purpose is to realize that you are not an accident.  You were created with unique talents, unique drive, and a unique fingerprint.  Your voice matters and as long as you have breath, you have the opportunity and responsibility to bring the reflection of your Creator into this world.

Next, you need to surround yourself with people that see the best in you.  This takes a special kind of person.  Often times people only value the car you drive, the talent you may have, or the position you hold.  These fair-weather friends often disappear when times get tough.   Hang on to those friends that speak life into you when things seem to be falling apart.  Be the friend that you are looking for.  Sometimes this requires you to drop the pride and be vulnerable.

For me, the journey of finding purpose began with identifying the two types of people and deciding I was tired of mediocre.  I was tired of being comfortable at a hum-drum job.  I was tired of telling my wife and kids how I used to be athletic and in shape.
I heard co-workers complain about the aches and pains of growing older and I also had examples like my pastor and my dad who continued to pursue fitness and life with a positive attitude.  The differences were clear.

There are plenty of reasons to not work out.  There have been plenty of reasons to stay comfortable at my dead end job, and lots of risk in venturing into another career after a decade in the same field.

However, the fear of leading a mediocre, color inside the lines existence grew greater than my fear of chasing something better.

At the gym we say “Don’t let good be robber of the best.”  We also believe that how you do anything is how you do everything.

Since jumping out of the nest I have been able to have a more flexible schedule and be with my family more.  I have also had the opportunity to train soldiers, new amputees, compete in Olympic lifting, strongman, CrossFit, and even bicycle and canoe racing!

My wife and I get to lead a workout group at church as well as a homeless outreach.  The quality of friends we have made at church and in the gym keep us going back for more.

We haven’t even scratched the surface yet on our full potential but I know the future is bright.  It is really unreal how helping others reach their potential can bring a fullness to your life.

I love the statement “hang on to the friends who speak life into you”. I’m stepping out into new adventures and this post is an encouragement to walk out my purpose.
